Guest Jim Harrison on a Missed Opportunity

When Presidential spokesperson Tony Snow was recently asked whether Christian Chaplains should be able to express their beliefs he  missed a wonderful opportunity to educate and confirm to the entire world that were are indeed a Judeo / Christian Nation.

Tony, or for that matter, the President himself  could have reminded us  that Christianity was and still is the bedrock of our nation's sovereignty - He could have noted that our very first congress started with a  Christian prayer or perhaps he could remind us of the command  authored by Abraham Lincoln on November 15, 1862
"The Commander in Chief ... enjoins the ... observance of the Sabbath ... the sacred rights of Christian soldiers and sailors, a becoming deference to the best sentiment of a Christian people ... demand that Sunday labor in the Army and Navy be reduced to the measure of strict necessity."
 
There are countless other examples  of Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, other government Officials and Civic Leaders who all recognized the obvious ---we are a Christian Nation and our constitution runs best on Christian gas. The French sociologist, Alexis de Tocqueville, who wrote of America said that “there is no country in the whole world where the Christian religion retains a greater influence than in America ... and nothing better demonstrates how useful it is to man, since the country where it now has the widest sway is both the most enlightened and the freest." 

Instead, our  President, in a time when the hounds of hell are desperately trying to destroy any vestige of a Christian Heritage, sends out a spokesperson?  A representative who assures us that our President prays to Jesus.  OK, but he failed to mention that Muslims - invited to the White House by this same Christian President, were also encouraged to pray to Allah. But then we all worship the same God, right?

What a wonderful opportunity lost to share Jesus and put a major dent in the secular assault on our nation.  But I believe there is yet a chance. Yes, there is still a window of opportunity for George Bush . . . .the Christian .

I pray that this week the President of this great nation, not Tony Snow, would address his fellow countrymen and say "you know I've been thinking, well actually I've been in prayer and I've come to the realization that we are indeed a Christian nation and that ours is a Christian Tradition. As commander and chief of the Armed forces - I have decided to continue the commitment made by our founding fathers and confirmed by countless other Presidents. I hereby commend Navy Lt. Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt on his willingness to continue in our proud tradition and absolve him from any punitive or financial damages he may have incurred as a result of his recent efforts.

As for the political fall out? Well, as always, "Duty is ours, the results are God's."
